Apple is suing OpenAI for alleged theft but Silicon Valley is founded on the exchange of ideas

The company and its chief executive Sam Altman are on the back foot about strategy, ethics and safety of the lab’s research and development. Apple’s lawsuit is carefully focused on the claim specific ex-employees kept company devices, downloaded secret files, and continued to gain access to its systems after quitting. But its effort to convince dozens of ex-staffers now at OpenAI to co-operate, though not unusual in such suits, looks heavy-handed. That competitors should fight to protect their intellectual, material and human assets is understandable.
